English Poem / HUMMING A SONG---PENNING A FEW LINES / by Durba Mitra

5.30 am
Mind woke up
Not yet my eyes
Humming a few
Gazals in my cerebrum.

Rolled onto my belly
Picked a pen
Opened the tab
A silly smile on lips
Written memories of you.

Got up and got ready
Got a daylong workshop
Thinking about
Meeting you in evening
Narrating my writing.

During the workshop
Phone kept on beeping
Your photo flashing
Cardiac arrest and car overturn
At 2.30 am.

Stopping my lecture
Came out of the hall
You had left us
At 6 am.
Post mortem is going on.

I drove down
Locked the car
Opened the gate
Bolero car was missing
I fled away.

5 months’ flashback
You had come to me
Rain drenched and hungry
I shooed you away.
My mood was to be alone.

You had gone away
Head down and eyes forlorn.
Called me later,
“You would never see me.”
I replied, “Would not require!”

You had kept your word
I could never disclose
That last chance to save you
You had stopped medication?
I will never know !
